New Abstract Work Listed

22 Jun

“Jungle Cat 2” is my latest abstract work. It’s acrylic on birch wood cradle, meant to be hung without a frame as all the sides are painted in copper metallic paint. I couldn’t accurately capture the true interplay of color and texture, due to the use of a lot of shiny gold and copper metallic paint. It’s a lot richer in real life. Here’s the link to the listing at Etsy.

Early American Folk Art On Display

19 Jun

The St. Louis Art Museum has a show currently running called “Self-Taught Genius,” a collection of artwork and craft items made by self-taught, early American artists.  I particularly like the wooden American flag that’s depicted at the top of the article; it reminds me of the American flag series of paintings of late 20th Century master Jasper Johns. If you are in the St. Louis area, it might be worth checking out.

Beardsley Inspired Drawings

18 Jun

My post about Aubrey Beardsley from a few days ago nudged me to go look for some Beardsley inspired pen-and-ink drawings from an old (almost 40 years!) college notebook. See what you think:

I’m Way Behind the Times

7 Jun

Look at this artist’s cool site that was apparently crafted from the paid WordPress tools and services. (I use the free stuff because I’m super-cheap.) But I’m way behind the times. I need to get serious about building a real site, and maybe separating my writing posts from my art posts. What do my readers think (all five of them?)

Sold!

7 Jun

Several new works have sold recently at my shop, including this one, this one, and this one. (Scroll down to see the work that’s been sold.) Everyone keeps telling me I sell my work for much too cheap, and I tend to agree, but I know a lot of people who started out selling their work online for ultra-cheap, then gradually increased prices when they built up a following. They tell me  that’s the way it’s done!

At any rate, I’m too old and cranky for the gallery scene, so my shop is what it is.

New Old Work Listed

I’ve decided to sell this older watercolor painting, from around the early 2000’s, entitled “Blue Iris.”

More New Work — Abstract

25 Apr
Two new paintings by SKColeArt in mid-century abstract style.

This one is another entrant in my series of meditations on mid-century Abstract Expressionism:

"Deep Purple" water color and ink on an acrylic impasto underpainting

“Deep Purple” water color and ink on an acrylic impasto underpainting

And a tribute to another mid-century type of art, that of the Italian minimalist painter, Giorgio Morandi:

BotlesAbstracts

“Bottles” water color, ink on archival paper, over an acrylic impasto underpainting.

Both are 18″ x 24″ on Strathmore 140 lb. archival paper and both are for sale in my Etsy shop.

Here’s a little bit about Giorgio Morandi.
